pypi klayout package license

Dear Matthias,

I was trying to check the license conditions for the python package published on pypi, and I came across an inconsistency.

  • in one of the recent forum posts you mentioned "... you may also use the "klayout" Python module from PyPI. ...and license requirements are relaxed." I guess this means LGPL instead of GPL, because this is also mentioned in your talk in 2018 (FOSS for HW design).
  • On the https://pypi.org/project/klayout/, the license is GPL.

Could you please clarify this question?

Thank you,
Dima.

  • Hi Dima,

No, it's not LGPL, it's GPL. Sorry. I apply however a liberal view about the term "linking". In my view, calling KLayout code from Python isn't "linking" and I don't consider the Python code "derived work". This means when you use Python, it's equivalent to LGPL.

See my explanation here: https://www.klayout.de/intro.html ("License implications for Ruby and Python scripts")

  • Hi Matthias,

Thank you for the reply! It is clear.

    Best regards,
    Dima.
