About save a gds file

edited August 2013 in General
Hi, I am new in learning Klayout and encounter a problem about save file.

1. I create my technology file by using Tools/Manage technologies.
2. I changed the default layers color
3. Drawing some simple BOX by each layer selected.
4. Save as L1. (my file name)

When I restart Klayout and open L1.
My problem is:
1. All the BOX disapear.
2. The layer colors seems return to defaut.

I doon't know where I am wrong. Please help me and guide me.

Thanks.

Best Regards,
CY

The layer are saved with the menu : [File][Save Layer Properties]
The prefered extention is : .lyp
Then, you can either load it : [File][Load Layer Properties]
or get these layers automatically each time you open KLayout :
[File][Setup][Application][Layer Properties]you tick : Use default layer properties file
and select your layer properties file just above

    Thank you, Laurent!
Now I know the function of [layer properties]. and its role in [setup].

However, I still cannot find the "BOX" I saved when I open the gds file again. I don't know why?

    Thanks.

    Hi CY,

you don't necessarily need to create a technology setup before starting. Try to start without a technology (choose default or clear the technologies you created) to begin with, that may be less confusing.

In a fresh layout, create layers with "Edit/Layer/New". They will get the default colors initially.

If you see your boxes, they should be inside your GDS files when you save it.

If you load a GDS file without a layer properties file, KLayout will show all layers inside the file and assign default colors.

If that works, you can start using layer properties files to save and load layer settings. Setting up a technology makes sense if you work with a number of different technologies and you want to quickly switch between different setups.

    Regards,

    Matthias
